Smith was the Captain's steward, and served as the second cook on Board the Bounty.

Fiercely loyal to his commander, he remained as Bligh's servant after reaching Timor after the voyage of the Launch.

He returned to England with Bligh on the 'Vlydte', arriving 14 Mar 1790 in Portsmouth Harbour.
