WILLIAM McCOY - A.B.

Born: 1763 in: Aberdeen (or Ross), Scotland

Died: 20 Apr 1798 on: Pitcairn Island at age: 35

Occupation: Bounty Seaman

We know almost nothing of his early life, but he appears to have been an employee of a Scottish distillery at one point.

He was 5'6" tall, fair complexion, light brown hair with a heavy beard, strong-made, a scar where he had been stabbed in the belly, and a small scar under his chin.  He was heavily tattooed all over his body.

McCoy was one of the last crewmen to sign on the Bounty.  He and his friend, Quintal, enlisted together, and that may well have been a black day for the future of the ship

MATTHEW QUINTAL

Born: 3 Mar 1766 in: Padstow, Cornwall, England

Died: 1799 on: Pitcairn Island at age: 32

He was a strong, muscular Cornishman from Padstow, 5'5" tall, with fair complexion, light brown hair, strong made, and heavily tattooed on his backside and elsewhere.

His mother died when he was young, and he lived with an uncle for two years.

After two years at Plymouth with his father, he shipped aboard the sloop-of-war, 'Nymphas' as servant to his uncle, a gunner.

After his uncle's death, he was appointed servant to the Captain of a man-o-war, serving three years.

There is no question that he was one of the most violent crewmembers and Pitcairn residents.

EDWARD YOUNG (Ned)

Born: 1766 in: Peel, Man, England

Died: 25 Dec 1800 at age: 34 on Pitcairn Island

Occupation: Bounty Midshipman

According to information in the Manx Museum, 'Ned' Young was possibly born in Peel, on the Isle of Man, but the more common belief is that he was born at St. Kitts in the West Indies of a Manx father and a West Indian mother.

He is said to have been a nephew of Sir George Young, but the official records of the Young family do not support this.

Because of his involvement in the mutiny, however, he could have been disowned by the family, and 'purged' from the family records.

JOHN MILLS

Born: 29 Apr 1749 in: Carnie by Huntly, Scotland
Died: 20 Sep 1793 on: Pitcairn Island at age: 44
Occupation: Bounty Gunner's Mate

A tall man (5'10"), and the oldest of the mutineers, the Bounty Gunner's Mate had a fair complexion, light brown hair, was strong-made, and raw-boned.

He had a scar on his right armpit due to an abcess.  His early history suggests a sadistic bully-boy.

On the 'Mediator', he was known to send midshipmen on fools' errands in order to steal their food.
